Gorakhpur hospital tragedy and about Japanese Encephalitis.

There is more than 70 children died in BRD Medical Hospital Gorakhpur ,Uttar Pradesh. Most of the admitted children attacked by virus Japanese Encephalitis. Report said that most of children died because of disease Japanese Encephalitis virus and lack of Oxygen.

Cause: 
  • Japanese Encephalitis disease usually comes during monsoon, which claims 100 of children die every  year due to lack of timely healthcare. The same happened this year. JE is not only confined to Gorakhpur, it is reported across the country but it is highly endemic in Eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. 
  • Tragedy happens because only tertiary care centre with 100 beds dedicated for Japanese Encephalitis is in Gorakhpur, which caused adjacent districts to come for treatment in Gorakhpur.
 About Japanese Encephalitis:
  • Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a disease spread through mosquito. JE Virus is transmitted by female culex mosquito to humans.
  • The virus usually survives in pigs and birds.
  • Symptoms are fever, headache, vomiting, confusion, difficult of moving, and later include swelling around the brain and coma.
  • If the symptoms are not treated properly within hour of appearing, that may cause death.
