ISRO to launch Hyperspectral Imaging Satellite.

TNPSC Current Affairs - August 2017 by TNPSC Guru.

Indian Space research Organisation has planning to launch full-fledged niche Earth observation (EO) satellite called the Hyperspectral Imaging Satellite (HySIS). HySIS which captures images across the electromagnetic spectrum, beyond the wavelength that the human eye can recognise.

For this ISRO has developed the new chip called “optical imaging detector array” which would be tested and perfected.

About Hyperspectral Imaging :
  • In Simple terms, a regular camera capture 3 spectral in every pixel of images (human eye visible light - Red, Green and Blue)  whereas hyperspectral images it captures more than 100 spectral which is not visible to Human eye.
  • Two methods used to obtain the hyperspectral images, push broom scanner and the whisk broom scanner.
  • Push Broom scanner will be using by ISRO to get hyperspectral imaging from earth orbit, that can see in 55 spectral or colour bands from altitude of 630 km above ground.

Benefits:
  • It will help in exploring minerals, resource management, monitoring environment.
  • It also use in Agriculture for monitoring the crops health.
  • It also use in Military surveillance and also in exploring space.
  • It also used in many research areas like agriculture, food analysis, mineral research ,forensic and more.

About Spectrum:
Spectrum describes the amount of light in different wavelength that shows how much light is emitted, reflected or transmitted from the object and also shows how much color that light contains.

The electromagnetic spectrum is describes as the entire range of light that exist in universe.
