India admits into Wassenaar arrangement

India has been admitted as 42nd member of Wassenaar arrangement, which aim to bring transparency or to regulate exports of conventional arms and use of dual use Goods and technologies.

About Wassenaar Arrangement. 
  • Wassenaar Arrangement established on 1996 with the aim to bring transparency or to regulate exports of conventional arms and use of dual use goods and Technologies.
  • It is headquartered in Vienna, Austria.
  • It is one of the four Multilateral export control regime which controls the Countries Exports. The other 3 Multilateral Export Control regime are The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), The Australia Group (AG) The Missile Technology Control Regime.
  • Wassenaar Arrangment has 42 Members including India. China is not the Member of Both Wassenaar Arrangement and MTCR.
  • The Admission will further boost India’s non-proliferation credential and will get access to high technologies for its defence and space programmes. It also helps India’s chances of joining NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group).
  • Also Last year in July 2016 India formally become member of Missile Technology Control Regime(MTCR), which is similar to Wassenaar arrangement. MTCR prevents proliferation of missile technology and state-of-the-art surveillance drones.
