Brazzaville declaration on largest Peatland.

• The Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo and Indonesia jointly signed the Brazzaville declaration to protect the world’s largest Peatland from unregulated land use, exploitation, degradation.
• This is world’s largest tropical Peatland, which stored equivalent of 3 years of global greenhouse emission in Congo Basin.
• The exploitation could result in release of 3 years equivalent Global Greenhouse emission in shorter period.

About Peatlands

• Peatlands are wetlands that contains mixture of decomposed plants that has accumulated in water saturated environment in absence of oxygen.
• Peatlands contains largest natural terrestrial carbon store.
• It is grown in course of more than 10,000 years and it can be destroyed in a few days if it is not protected.
