First Indian Sign Language (ISL) Dictionary

  • Union Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot launched India’s “First Indian Sign Language Dictionary of 3000 words” .
  • It was developed by Indian Sign Language Research & Training Centre (ISLR&TC).
  • The aim of dictionary is to remove the communication barriers between Deaf and hearing communities s as it is focused on providing more information in Indian sign language ,said by Union Minister. 

Dictionary consists of words of five categories:
  1. Everyday Terms – useful for everyday communication.
  2. Legal Terms – useful for explaining complicated legal terminology like “Affidavit”, “Acquittal”, and more.
  3. Academic Terms – useful to understand complex academic concepts like explaining nervous system, Revolution, Rotation, and more.
  4. Medical Terms – useful for better understanding medical terminology used in hospitals and in medical situations.
  5. Technical Terms – useful to understand technical terms that are used in vocational training or in computer courses
