MoU with South Asian Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP)

Union Cabinet has given its nod for signing Memorandum of Understanding between India and South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme for Co-operation on the response to Oil and Chemical Pollution in the region of South Asian Seas.

The main objective for the MoU is to protect and preserve the marine environment in South Asian sea by promoting closer cooperation between India and other maritime nation namely Bangladesh, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

About SACEP. 
  • SCEP is an intergovernmental Organisation established in 1982.
  • The main objective is to promote and support protection, management and enhancement of the environment in the South Asian region including India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan,  Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • It also developed jointly with with Interntional Maritime Organisation a Regional Oil Spill Contingency Plan" to facilitate international co-operation and mutual assistance in preparing and responding to a major oil pollution incident in the seas around the Maritime States.
