First ‘BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise- 2017’

India’s National Disaster Response Force to conduct First BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise- 2017 in Delhi. The aim of the exercise is to share the practices on  Disaster Risk Reduction , strengthening regional response and coordination for Disaster Management among member countries.

India’s Efforts : 
  • India leads in front for taking effort on Disaster Risk Reduction in BIMSTEC regions by hosting South Asian Annual Disaster Management Exercise and the Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • India also provided South Asia Satellite (GSAT-9) (GIFT for SAARC nations), Tsunami Early warning centre to the South Asian Countries to help in Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • It is because most of the South Asian Region are situated ,prone to natural disasters like Earthquake, floods, cyclones , Tsunami and more. 

About BIMSTEC:
  • BIMSTEC is a Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation(BIMSTEC) , is a home 22 % of global population .
  • It comprising of 7 countries including Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka from South Asia and Myanmar and Thailand from South East Asia.
  • It was established in 1997 ,, headquarters is at Dhaka, Bangladesh and the Chairmanship will be in  rotational basis based on alphabetical order
